Girl Power have been lucky enough to catch up with The Saddle Club girls while they take a few moments to reflect on the enormous success they've enjoyed over the past two years.
Keenan:
Do you prefer singing or acting more?
That's a good question! I'm not sure which on I prefer, they are both so important to me. Some days it depends on my mood- whether I'm in the mood for singing or in the mood for acting. But in general I like them both equally!
Did you sing before Saddle Club came along?
Yes, I've been singing since I was about 8! I've taken lessons and I was even in the choir for a few years.
What kind of music do you listen to at home?
Hmm. Well I listen to a wide variety of music. Let's see...Motown, hip-hop, pop, soft rock etc. I really like artists like Kayne West, Green Day, Usher, Norah Jones, Otis Redding, Jackson Five, Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, and a whole other truckloads of singers and musicians!
Besides Saddle Club of course, what is your favourite TV show?
Right now, my favourite show is My Wife and Kids. I'm not sure why, I guess it just makes me laugh. I do love Friends and many others as well through.
What do you think it is about Saddle Club that makes it so popular?
I think a lot of it has to do with the idea of three best friends who all love horses and especially each other, they'll do anything for each other and Pine Hollow- how can you beat that? It also helps that we're friends in real life- half of the time we don't even have to act!
What has been the most exciting experience you've had as a result of being part of Saddle Club?
There have been so many great opportunities! It's tough to pick just one, but I have to say going to the Logies was amazing! I'd never gone on the red carpet before and it was everything I had hoped for! I was a little nervous though!
Do your friends treat you differently since you've become famous? Ha ha my friends? Nope, not at all! They are so supporting of me and I love them to bits. There has never been any extra attention surrounding Saddle Club. They know me well enough to not be fazed by my career.
Lara:
Thinking back to before Saddle Club- how much has your life changed as a result of the success of the show?
When I got the part I never would have imagined that it would be so successful and popular. We have so much merchandising it's unfunny. We have made four albums and have been nominated in the ARIA awards. We have made so many appearances at the Logies, AFIs, and numerous premieres. The show and the songs have been great hits.
What is the best part of being part of Saddle Club?
The family that you form with the cast and crew. We all look out for each other. The experience I've had during Saddle Club is amazing. I've learnt so much. The joy of acting!
Have you always liked horses?
I love animals. I wasn't a rider before Saddle Club, I'd only just done a couple of trails rides but now, I'm a frequent rider. I do love horses, especially mine.
Do you think horses will be a lifelong interest after spending so much time with them on the show?
I think I'll keep on riding as long as I can.
What do you like to get up to in your spare time?
Snowboarding, singing, dancing, acting, going to movies, soccer, designing and photography.
Do you like to watch your self on TV?
I think it's fun watching yourself on TV. It takes you back to when you were doing the scene and all the fun time you had. I'm not critical.
Sophie:
You guys have such a loyal fan-base what's your most memorable fan encounter?
Every time I meet a fan I have this sense of appreciation. You can't really explain how much I truly appreciate them. I love it when I receive a drawing or a letter, to know that person has really loved and learned from the show is so wonderful and I very much appreciate it.
How do you manage school on top of your filming and recording commitments?
I go to a school in Toronto (where I'm from) that specialises in students who are missing school due to career commitments. There are plenty of actors and sports players there. It works with students, like myself, who want to continue doing these activities but still keep and maintain doing their school while away. We work via correspondence through the Internet.
Do you hope to stay in the entertainment industry long term?
Yes for sure! I have been acting and in this industry my whole life and feel a sense of home with it. It's the most competitive and jealous industry that makes it terrible, but I love the challenges and the work I do. I want to be acting, writing and producing my music and screenplays, and even designing clothes down the road (my long time hobby!). Recording a song that you have written is such an amazing feeling! Although more than anything I just want to be happy. Whatever life throws at me, I will face!
What do you like best about your Saddle Club character?
Stevie has something very extraordinary. She is completely content and proud of who she is, inside and out. She isn't easily influenced by others and she goes for what she believes in. Some kids never truly appreciate what they have, they are always wanting something else. Stevie is courageous and strong and I really admire that. She is someone I think we should all look up to, believing in yourself is the most important thing.
What do you like least about Stevie?
I think she is very stubborn. She thinks of wacky, crazy ideas and believes in them at 100%. Sometimes this leads her and her friends into problems. She won't take other's advice- she just goes for it and leads herself into a lot of troubles. She is a little full on it that respect!
Are you very similar to your Stevie?
I would say I am, and I'm not. We both cherish friends although I think I cherish my family more than she does. We both love horses and riding so we are very similar there. I am much less of a tomboy than her. I spend endless hours shopping and designing and I think, although she has a cool/crazy sense of style, it's much more of a love for me. She is a very unique person and doesn't like to follow others, that is something we both share-individuality.
If you could come up with a storyline for your character what would it be?
It would be that somehow Stevie and Kristi are faced with the same issue in their lives. It would be a hard episode but a very unique and interesting one. They would have to admit that they both are going through the same thing. Not only Stevie and Kristi but it would be cool to see how Lisa, Carole, and even Veronica deal with this.
